Student Success Story: From HyperionDev graduates to HyperionDev Coding Mentors

Posted by

One of the benefits of HyperionDev’s bootcamps is our coding mentorship programme. Because learning code is not a one-size-fits-all process, the HyperionDev team focuses as much on people as we do on teaching tech. From the very beginning, each student has access to a coding mentor who ensures our students learn to code the way professionals do right from the get-go.

You might not have known that many of our mentors are previous HyperionDev graduates, so they know the courses inside and out. This puts them in a great position to track students’ progress and deepen their understanding of putting code into practice.

Meet three of our top mentors from Cape Town, Martin Carstens, Siviwe Tshananda, and John Dorman, and see how they have excelled with HyperionDev.

Martin Carstens – From Logistics Coordinator to Software Engineer

Martin switched careers from working in logistics and as an import and export coordinator to following his dream of working in tech – where his heart was all along. He signed up for the immersive Full Stack Web and Software Engineer Bootcamp, studying online full-time. After finishing first in his class, he was approached by HyperionDev to become a coding mentor.

With a natural affinity for computer science, Martin started by building advanced models of Excel and creating websites from scratch. Through the knowledge gained during his bootcamp, he could evaluate the websites he had built and improve them.

As a HyperionDev mentor, he primarily uses MERN stack –  the combination of technologies used to create a web application. Building on this knowledge, he is currently upskilling himself by learning more coding languages so that one day he can work on building startups.

What does he love most about his coding career? That’s easy; he says:

That moment when you know you are on the right track and simply can’t stop, even if it means coding until 3 am. I get that extra dopamine rush when I finally solve the missing piece of the puzzle about why the code wasn’t working.”

Siviwe Tshananda – From IT Tech to Data Scientist

Siviwe enrolled in our online part-time Data Science Bootcamp. At the time, he was studying electrical engineering while working full-time as an IT technician but found being confined to fixing existing systems stifled his creative side. He managed the demands of the bootcamp by tracking task submissions and through one-on-one sessions with his mentor.

Now a mentor himself, Siviwe has immersed himself in the role while staying on top of new tech developments. He especially enjoys developing new strategies for improving the learning process to ensure students complete their courses. He’ll monitor and respond to student queries as they come in, helping them master tricky projects and keeping them motivated.

Siviwe, who one day wants to introduce coding to his village community in the Eastern Cape, says working as a HyperionDev mentor comes with many advantages:

What I like most is waking up happy to go to work and doing cool stuff with cool people working towards the same goal.

John Dorman – From Retail Admin to Software Engineer

John is a former HyperionDev Software Engineering Bootcamp graduate who left an unfulfilling job in retail administration to pursue his dream of working in tech. He chose software development because it puts you at the heart of the digital economy, with endless scope for growth. It is precisely the skills he needs to fulfill his dream of working in Europe in the not-too-distant future.

What John found most rewarding about HyperionDev’s software engineering bootcamp is that it’s structured to allow students to start coding as soon as possible. Tasks are designed in such a way as to not only teach you the skills but show you how to put them into practice using machine learning and Python. In April this year, John was named Student of the Month for his boundless energy and passion and for always going the extra mile and looking for new ways to learn.

In his current role as a HyperionDev mentor, John handles student submissions, reviews them, and provides feedback. He also conducts live one-on-one sessions with students to help them master complicated problems.

And the coolest thing about code? John says:

Code can do a lot to help improve the world, such as using AI to help solve world hunger by identifying places where food can be grown and help improve the way food is transported so it reaches the right people.”
