HyperionDev Employee story: Serge Thomas

Posted by

Our mentors are what make our bootcamps such a world-class essential tech skill education. Learning to code isn’t easy: there are lots of new concepts, jargon, and technologies for newcomers to grasp. Luckily, many of our mentors know what it’s like to start learning from scratch, and many of them are even products of our bootcamps, making them naturals at helping beginner coders. Today’s HyperionDev employee story focuses on one of our friendly, expert coding mentors, Serge Thomas.

Serge came to HyperionDev with a background in freelance development, mostly in python. However, his passion for learning and teaching drove him to apply for a position helping others along the difficult road of learning to code. Today, Serge’s work as a HyperionDev mentor is a critical part of our bootcamps’ successes: he helps hundreds of people switch careers into high-paying developer roles, with a patient ear, and a smile. We asked him a few questions about what it’s like to work on our team.

What do you enjoy most about working at HyperionDev?

The coworkers! Everyone I work with has passion for what they do. The energy they all bring makes it worth being here.

What’s the heart and soul of your role as an on-site HyperionDev mentor?

My team works within the HyperionDev education department. On a daily basis, we mentors are actively engaging with people to help them learn  a skill that has the potential to open so many doors for them. This could be in achieving a dream in tech, or in pursuing their career goals. I find it so interesting to be part of someone’s journey and kind of tag along for the ride with them.

What motivates you to come in or log in in the mornings?

The students! The students that come onto campus have different backgrounds and personalities so it’s always interesting to engage in such a diverse environment.

Tell us a bit about your professional development whilst working with HyperionDev.

I was originally a Software Engineering student and I am currently upskilling my Web Development skills as well.

How do you ensure that you keep yourself upskilled & knowledgeable in your field of expertise?

I am always relearning, mostly through online tutorials and learning resources. It might sound like ‘tutorial hell’ but I’ve come to realise that revisiting the fundamentals keeps me sharp and solidifies the concepts.

Which one of HyperionDev’s core values resonates with you most and why?

Progress Always, Its common knowledge that programming is hard but It is not as common that mistakes are allowed in the learning stage so this resonates with me because most students don’t anticipate the amount of mistakes they’ll make and I like to get to a point with them where they realise that it’s normal to make mistakes as long as they carry on with the journey and try to move forward.

What’s a fond memory you have of working at HyperionDev?

We got donuts/doughnuts from Jena and we had a mini donut party with everyone which was just thoughtful. Donuts can cure fatigue!

How is HyperionDev different from other places you’ve worked?

I had on/off jobs before this so as my first full time job I could not have wished for a better start in my career, from my managers to my co-workers it is really not what I expected of the work environment.

What makes you feel PROUD to work for HyperionDev?

The people I work with, the energy in the Edu-department is of a genuine need to help people get a start in their career in tech. They are all so helpful and knowledgeable it kind of motivates me to try my hardest as well.
